There are Four Categories of Brainwave patterns:
1. Beta (14-30 Hz) - which is our alert state when we are awake and concentrate on work, school, etc...
2. Alpha (8-13.9 Hz) - which is the relaxed state when we are still maintain the relaxed focus. This is one of the common states that Hypnotherapists would like to bring their clients to, a state that helps increase a person's serotonin. The opening gate to the subconscious mind.
3. Theta (4-7.9 Hz) - which is a dreaming sleep state. It is also called REM sleep. When people who are practicing deep meditation and under deep trance state, this is the desired state to be in. In this state, our bodies will increase catecholamines which is important for learning and memory. In hypnotherapy, this is optimal state for clients to be in for change in behavior and increase the retention of the learned materials or positive suggestions.
4. Delta (1-3.9 Hz) - which is dreamless sleep. It is the state that our bodies release the Human Growth Hormone.
