When looking at food, the ancient Chinese people discovered that some food were edible and could be taken both as "medicine" and as food because they not only could allay their hunger, but also were very useful for healthcare and treatment of diseases. In the modern Chinese society, people are still following the traditional therapeutic way of eating by paring the proper food and herbs to create therapeutic effects or just simply to maintain a balanced and healthy body.
Today, I would like to talk about our first choice of food - Millet. Millet contains majority of starch with some fat, sugar, nitrogen, and protein. It also contains a huge amount of vitamin B and minerals as well.
In Chinese Medicine, food and herbs are always categorized by their nature, flavor, and entering channels (meridians). Here, millet is mainly sweet and salty in taste and cool in nature. Old millet, on the other hand, is bitter in taste and cold in nature. It enters into the Kidney, Spleen, and Stomach channels.
So, what is the benefits of eating millet?
Millet can regulate middle burner (middle Jiao), tonify Kidneys, remove pathogenic heat and impure or toxic quality of any substance. It is great for deficient heat in Spleen and Stomach. It helps with regurgitation of food from the Stomach and vomiting. It also helps with diabetes and diarrhea.
Old millet is more effective on arresting dysentery, relieving thirst and restlessness. It is great for dripping urine due to damp-heat.
Be mindful of the amount of millet to be used in a diet because a person who is deficient in Qi and has cold symptoms should eat less millet.
