Happy New Year! We wish you all a prosperous and happy year of the snake!
Today I would like to talk about pears since most Chinese families probably have digested many different kinds of "New Year" food and alcohol. It is a tradition for everyone to celebrate with abundance through eating. In the old days, each family would make sure they have enough rice in their ceramic rick container at home. Rice signifies abundance for each family in the farming society.
Drinking too much alcohol and eating deep-fried greasy food can cause damp-heat and possibly phlegm. It will be beneficial for resolving phlegm, promoting body fluid, and moistening the dryness by simply to eat some pears or drink some "pear water" by boiling some pears in water.
Pears contain sugar, citric acid, malic acid, vitamin B1, B2, A, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and tiny protein and fat.
Pears are sweet and slightly sour in taste and cool in nature. They go to Lung and Stomach channels.
Besides resolving the phlegm, pears are also great for restlessness and thirst due to impairment of body fluids during febrile disease, diabetes (Xiao Ke), heat type of cough, madness due to phlegm-heat, dysphagia, and constipation.
Note: A person who is suffering from loose stools caused by Spleen deficiency should avoid eating pears.
